Sarah knows she’s only got six months left to live, but she’s set her mind to die the way she lived; theatrically, whether anyone else likes it or not. ‘forget me not’ follows young, eccentric artist Sarah, as she copes with her own impending mortality by using her own funeral as a staged, theatrical event as an attempt to control the way she will be remembered.
The world the audience finds themselves in is that of Sarah’s studio where rehearsals and drama unfold; like her, the projects and set pieces she’s surrounded by all appear half finished and the studio space will evolve as she constructs the set over the course of the production, attempting to finally finish something that she can leave behind. Adding to this, surreal representations of Sarah’s denial and fears are brought to life through masks, puppetry, and projections.
Sarah, alongside the long-suffering friends she’s enlisted to help, find themselves inadvertently exploring the concepts of mortality, identity and interpersonal relationship and are forced to confront what, or perhaps who, they truly value. However, at the heart of this story, beyond all of the friends and fears, is Sarah’s mother. The exploration of their relationship is the emotional core of the show.
The plays operates within the space of the surreal and bizarre but remains grounded in the very real and tangible relationships between it’s characters. It is a relatable story for audiences young and old as we wrestle with our own questions of what it means to not be forgotten.
